Study paleontology from paleontologists

The paleontology program is led by 教授. 托马斯·卡尔, assistant professor of biology. 教授. 卡尔 is a vertebrate paleontologist (studying fossils of animals with back骨头) 和 a recognized expert on tyrannosaurid dinosaurs.

  • Mel Krukow ?26

“Not only a perfectly sized smaller school, but Carthage also offers everything I need to become a paleontologist.”

  • Maverick Leer

“The Biology Department at Carthage has strong research opportunities 和 lots of interesting classes to take. The professors are helpful 和 are very good to get to know.”

  • Brett Jackson

“There is a variety of specialties 和 skills you can learn as a biology major. I came to Carthage for its paleontology program, which is rare in undergraduate studies 和 even rarer to have it through a biological 和 anatomical perspective.”

教授. 卡尔 is also the senior scientific advisor for the Dinosaur Discovery Museum (DDM) in downtown 出赛, which houses the Carthage Institute of 古生物学 (CIP). A noted professional researcher on dinosaurs, 教授. 卡尔 has been featured on the National Geographic Channel, 在流行刊物上, 和 as curator for museum exhibits, including the “Feathered Dinosaur” exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum.

COLLECT THE BONES OF DINOSAURS SUCH AS T. 雷克斯 & 三角龙

The CIP leads a month-long dinosaur-hunting expedition to southeastern 蒙大拿 led by 教授. 卡尔. Carthage students have the opportunity to discover 和 collect in the Hell Creek Formation, a unit of rock deposited in 蒙大拿 和 adjacent states at the end of the age of dinosaurs. The expeditions take place on public l和s overseen by the Bureau of L和 Management.

Since the expedition started, the crews of 教授. 卡尔 have located dozens of dinosaur skeletons. 到目前为止, 他们已经编目了110种,000 fossils that include teeth, 骨头, 还有恐龙的鳞片, 鳄鱼, 海龟, 鱼, 鸟, 和哺乳动物. The dinosaurs include rare juvenile 三角龙T. 雷克斯. Bones collected during the expedition are brought back to the CIP, where the fossils are prepared 和 conserved by student volunteers 和 citizen scientists. The fossils are stored in the permanent collections of the DDM, which is a federal repository for paleontological resources.
